The latest word is that the VHSL theatre competiton (tentatively scheduled for January 31 at Glen Allen) may likely be moved up to Wednesday, January 30th. I’m told a decision should be made in the next few days. The date will be posted here once a final decision has been announced.

December 4, 2012The 2013 VHSL Theatre Competition has been tentatively scheduled for Thursday, January 31st at Glen Allen High School.
The HHS entry will be selected by members in good standing of the HHS International Thespian Society (ITS) and will be directed by a senior member of that organization. Auditions will be open to all students.
Students interested in becoming members of ITS may find out more about eligibility by visiting this site. New members are inducted in the spring of each school year.
There will be an ITS meeting today after school (make-up meeting Wednesday morning at 8 a.m.) to discuss the selection process for the VHSL competition piece. At that time we will decide on a special meeting to be held next week for proposal of performance pieces and voting.

August 18, 2012Musical Comedy Classic Kicks Off Fall Theatre Season
August 10, 2012The 2012-2013 theatre season will lead off with Mamamouchi: A Musical Comedy, an adaptation of Moliere’s Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme. The play is a wonderfully crowd-pleasing mixture of fantasy, comedy, singing, and dancing.
Praise for the play:
“A masterwork of musical comedy.”
—The Cambridge Companion to Moliere
“The first 45 minutes constitute one long extended joke, but what a wonderful joke!”
—The Harvard Crimson
Praise for the playwright:
“What is his standing in the gigantic literary Olympics?
In his class, Dramatic Comedy, he is the unquestioned champion. He created the popular comedy as we know it today.”
—Modern Library College Editions
“His inventiveness is extraordinary. An actor-manager-director-playwright all in one, he knew and loved the stage as few have done, and wrote with it and his playgoing public always in mind.”
—Signet Classics
Our production will change a number of things to modernize the play, but you can get a sneak peak at the translation that our adaptation will be based on here: http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/2992
Auditions will take place during the second week of school. Stayed tuned for more details. Feel free to post questions in the comments.
Note: The painting above was inspired by Moliere’s play. The master of the house, attempting to show off his new found fencing skills, is outdone by his maid in just one of the play’s many memorably comic scenes. (“Jourdain Fencing His Maid,” by Charles Leslie–Victoria & Albert Museum, London)
